Can anyone point me in the direction of a web site / historical data that will provide average P/E ratios across the market sectors or, even better, by specific industries.

Try www.digitallook.com

Go to the screener and you can select industries there giving p/e ratios and other valuation metrics

You can get historic pers on shares and sectors for about 5 years via sharescope gold,they will give you a free look but a few months out of date

just do a search for sharescope to find the site sorry but its not at hand hth Zulu
