    Silver

Dont fancy buying silver and storing it under my bed. Are there any ETFs that deal with Silver or any other method of holding silver whereby I wont need to be in actual possession of the silver. Am I also right in assuming that if I dont take physical possession I wont have to pay VAT? Thanks in advance.

Barclays are trying to set up an ETF concerning silver but it is being resisted at the moment (many people fear silver becoming a mainstream investment which will raise its price).

You can buy futures contracts and roll it over every month to avoid taking delivery. This will allow gearing as well but you will need to set up an account for this. This will be the best way to profit from silver but since it is unlikely you know anyone who is doing this and it gets very little coverage in the press then it may be a daunting prospect (it is for me anyway).

A silver e-currency account may be another way. There is one already operating

or you can wait for the one being set up by goldmoney which is due this month of December. I will certainly be opening an account with one of them as I believe silver is grossly undervalued at the moment.

    Hi Footsie,

there is a possibility that the Phoenix Dollar will become a serious contender in the ecurrency environment, using silver for 100%-backing. There is a sort of referral system, for instance, I have an early account with a number of benefits including zero fees at http://235.phoenixdollar.com/ I guess we shall see how this goes. Gold is rising rapidly so it may prudent to have some silver stashed away somewhere.

    RE: Silver

An ETF is an Exchange-Traded Fund.

A simple ETF consists of a portfolio of stocks which is intended to replicate some index or another, such as the FTSE100, or perhaps consists specifically of listed property trusts. Whatever the make up of the ETF, the intention is to allow investment in one instrument that averts the need to invest in many.

You can get Gold ETFs and even Silver ETFs. I am not an expert on this by any means but my limited understanding is that many investment institutions find futures such as gold futures too risky to dabble in so ETFs have been devised whereby actual physical gold can be owned rather than paper trades (as in the case of most future contracts).

I believe that there are problems with silver ETFs because there is a limit in many countries to the amount of silver that can be stored and bought.

    RE: Silver

Thanks for that. Most of the speculation regarding gold has been right and I am sure silver will follow
