Doubles are large detached properties spilt into two apartments. It looks like one big house with a door  in the front for the lower floor.   The door for the upper can be found on the side of the property. They are normally huge with maybe three bedrooms in each apartment.

I went to Buffalo to buy these and have a lot of experience with the whole buying process(made some mistakes).

My agent is Todd Vanderlip,he has posted here. Very straight and sensible agent.

The US term would be duplex. Granted this is a conversion. It is still seen as a duplex in that there is 1 title to the property but two self-contained residential units. Tri-plex for 3 units. Quad or 4-plex for 4. More than 4 units and it is a commercial property as no one could get an owner occupied loan if they wanted to live there. Hence the 5 units and above need commercial financing. No premium on the value for owner occupancy.
