Theres no single answer to that
It depends on your personal attitude and the chances of realistically being compensated should you take the trouble to track them down and try for prosecution / compensation
in this case sounds liker you have more than a fighting chance of success...so why not try?
As with many things, I use gut feeling, and with a situation like this Id do the same
Maybe ive been fortunate, but Ive never experienced an issue like that - the most ive been out 0o pocket after the deposit was kept was a couple of hundred - hence my philosophical response
As I said...I dont think theres a stock answer. But certainly for a few hundred quid i would just 'move on'
