    Re: Invest in trees

I moved house just after posting this and the seamless transfer on my broadband got me cut off for a couple of weeks, I didn't realise how much I enjoy these sites I was quite traumatised

Anyway I eventually found the e-mail that had prompted this post and it was direct investment in USA forrestry companies, they wanted a subscription to get the names and I wasn't inclined to sign up but look to the USA forrestry sector and do a bit of digging if interested

    Re: Invest in trees

I'm fiercely patriotic and, given the choice, I think it's important to invest in UK assets.

It does seem forestry is a vogue way to 'give something back', what with Felix Dennis creating his Forest of Dennis.  Although I do think he's missing a trick there - 'Felix Forest' would have been much more alliteratively pleasing!

    Re: Invest in trees

I was looking to invest in in the shares not run a business directly so I'm not sure there is a choice of UK companies, the land mass isn't there?

If you don't mind another perspective of investing mainly in British assetts, if you invest in profitable overseas companies but reside mainly in the UK then the transfer of profits from these companies will accrue to you over here to be spent and used in the uk ie an offshore source of income, and so indirectly benefits our home economy

    Re: Invest in trees

Just revisiting a posting and to my acute embarrasment I would not blame anyone for thinking I was smoking the residue of some exotic plant, not true though just had a senior moment I guess.

Anyway on reflection I note one of my comments happened to be bang on the money for 2007- increased interest rates (but not in the way I expected ie. cost of money uncoupling from the official BOE rate - and LIBOR going quite so high, just glad I got out of Alliance and Leicester shares before they too fell in sympathy with Northern Rock.

Anyway if anybodys interested the easiest way into forestry IMHO is through FIM Services Ltd. www.fimltd.co.uk via their FIM Timber growth fund iv - second issue

They are looking to raise £10M, minimum investment per client £20k

The first issue raised £13M and this was invested in primarily Sitka Spruce forests in Scotland and Wales totalling 2580 hectares

Forestry is a good diversification play and a little more stable than other asset classes at the moment.
