    Gold Bullions or Bars

    Hi

I am currently investing in gold bars and bullions.  Just wondering if any one knows, which is the best investment for the small investor.  The only advice I can find on the internet is coins are easier to sell on.  What are folks opinions?  Also I currently own Australian coins and bars - do you think they would be harder to sell in the UK?

    Cheers

Thats an interesting one Becks - what sort of return are you expecting? Presumably this would need to be offset against the cost of a safety deposit box - or do you never actually hold the gold?

I know in Japan it became the only safe option for peoples savings and people where literally storing bullion under their beds.

    Hi Becks,

I have heard gold coins of the 1oz kind are the easiest to buy and sell. The 22 karat Kruggerrands and Britannias are well-known, however there seems to be a market for the 24 karat Australian perth mint coins and even the ultra pure .9999 Canadian Maples.

Having said that I have yet to buy gold (except via my egold account smilewinkgrin ), I have been close on a number of occasions. I am currently investigating a way of getting hold of gold coins at a considerable discount, will let you know if it is OK.

Can you buy actual gold bars the likes of which are in the films Kelly's Heroes, Three Kings and of course Goldfinger?

    Hi Phil,

yes you can buy those gold bars at £70k a pop shocked they weigh 400oz. But there will be a mandatory notification to HM Customs & Excise (any gold purchase to the value of £5k at any one time, or £10k over a 12 month period) rolleyes

Oh well I don't think I'll have to worry about customs quite yet :-)

Still debating what is the best bars or coins.  Most gold web sites I have searched on suggest coins, apparently coins are easier to sell on.  However, you get more gold for your money if you buy bars. Rhys if you find anyone selling gold coins at a discount for bulk then let me know - would be interesting to see how they compare.
