    Invest in trees

Tree stocks have outperformed shares, oil, bonds by a significant margin over the last decade and more, they don't care whether it rains or the sun shines they just keep growing, due to tax benefits in the usa they pay minimal tax and pay out upto 90% of their earnings, they will always be in demand all over the world and thanks to sustainable harvesting are renewable and never ending, just rambling thoughts as I contemplate a couple of investments any comments?(stress test my ideas with fellow piggies)

    Regards Zulu

Zulu, do you want to throw up a few names and I will have a look at their form. Sounds good in theory and we might even be doing something for the planet while hopefully making money!

    Re: Invest in trees

Zulu, don't know if you've heard of a book "Home-Grown Energy from Short-Rotation Coppice" by George MacPherson (mine is dated 1995). It covers planting and harvesting willows (and maybe poplar i think) then selling on as wood-chips as an alternative (and much cheaper) ongoing source of energy.

It's the sort of thing that looks a bit like too-much trouble for most of us but a bloke I worked with in the past swore by it as being profitable, and certainly a highly ethical way of making money!..GB

just dug it out..ISBN 0-85236-289-7 if interested

also Bidwells Agricultural dept. are agents for forestry sales . A meaningful investment would be nothing less than 100 Hectares (£150k) with a good proportion of that being Sitka Spruce. In Scotland expect to pay £1500 per hectare. For amenity Woodland in Southern England expect to pay more.

You can reduce your investment level (minimum £20k) by buying into specialist forestry funds. This route is particularly popular if you have a pressing need to mitgate an inheritance tax liabilty. ie. an ederly relative in poor health with a life expectancy of less than 7 years. By gifting an investment in qualifying forestry it will be excluded from the donors estate after 2 years and not normal 7 years, which is the case for most lifetime gifts

Forestry also introduces a further asset diversification to your portfolio. Once your portfolio contains the classic mix of Residential & Commercial Property, Equities, Gilts and Corporate Bonds, and in 2007 and for the forseeable future, cash. as base rates rise and liquidity tightens.
