Running a business from your home
These days, the internet and World Wide Web make it easier to work at home. When all you need is a computer and an internet connection, starting an online business is easier than ever. There are a lot of legitimate home business opportunities to be found.
You don’t need to have your own business in order to work at home. Many companies will offer telecommuting positions for those who would rather conduct their business at home.
Control your schedule
When you work at home, you have complete freedom over your schedule. If you would like to start your work day at noon and end it well into the evening it is okay. You are in control. Instead of scheduling appointments to visit the doctor or dentist around your work schedule, you can adapt your work schedule to your appointments, for example.
Just be careful that you don’t spend your entire day running errands. People assume that because they work at home they will have more time to do housework and run errands. If you let your entire day go by without working on your business, you won’t succeed.
Finding business ideas
What kind of business would you like to operate from home? When you work at home, you not only have control over your schedule, you also have control over the kind of business you have.
Some people know exactly what kind of business they want. Others only know that they would like to work at home and don’t have a solid idea. If this is you, make a list of all the possible business ideas you can think of. Then, assess your best ideas to see which you should pursue.
Finding legitimate home business ideas can be tough. Business ideas include graphic designer, photographer, writer, internet marketer, personal chef, or consultant. Starting an online business is also another option.
Write the business plan
After you find an idea that seems great, your next step is to write the business plan. Just because you work at home doesn’t mean you can afford to cut corners. Hire someone to write it for you if you need to. This is not only your plan for success, it can help you decide if an idea is truly worth pursuing.
Setting up the home office
If your home business is going to be successful, you need to set up your work at home office. Your office will need to have a phone, fax, a computer, and a solid system of organisation. If you don’t have enough space in your home to devote an entire room to your business, use dividers to section off part of another room. Plenty of businesses have started on the kitchen table, in a corner of the bedroom, in supply closets, and underneath the stairwell. The important thing is that you find a space that will only be used when you are working.
Have a separate phone
It is important that you have a separate phone for your business, especially if you have children. Explain to them that they should never answer or use that particular phone. Although you may think it is cute, if clients call your house and your small child answers, it can make you look unprofessional.
Office hours
Once you decide to work at home, you will notice that your family can be very demanding of your time. When you are home, you seem more accessible. Even though your family may support you, they may not realise that you can’t have a productive day with constant interruptions.
One way to fix this is to have set office hours. Tell your family that every day between certain hours, they can’t bother you. Hire a babysitter during those hours if you need extra help or have your significant other watch the children while you work. This is especially important if you are constantly on the phone for your work.
Time management
This is a struggle for almost every business owner. When you work at home, you are presented with a whole new set of challenges. The temptation to take care of housework can not only be a distraction, it can encourage procrastination. There is time to take care of everything in the day, you just need to learn to manage your time.
Purchase a large calendar and block off time for important things such as exercise and tidying your home. Consider outsourcing some of your business tasks to free up time and definitely hire someone to thoroughly clean your house. Before each day, make a list of all the urgent tasks that need to be taken care of and accomplish those first. After a while of being in business you will develop a system that works for you.
If all else fails…
Just because you work at home, it doesn’t mean you need to actually have your office at home. If your home is too distracting and you find you are wasting a lot of time, don’t be afraid to move your office to a rented space. I’ve heard of a lot of home business owners taking this approach. While the concept of working at home may seem convenient, some people just can’t get enough done at home. The wasted time means that you will not make enough money. You don’t need to make your office public. This is simply your space to conduct business uninterrupted.
Bookkeeping
An essential part of having a business is bookkeeping. Yet, many people who work at home may feel as if they don’t have the skills or the time to do their own bookkeeping. You can either learn by reading about it or taking classes or hire someone to do it for you. If your business finances aren’t organised you could waste a lot of time and money.
The bottom line
When you work at home, you have complete control over your schedule. With the right business idea, excellent time management skills, and the right tools, starting an online business and a legitimate home business can be a lucrative option.
