What is Goal Setting
Setting goals is a great way to improve both your business
and personal life. But what exactly is goal setting? Goal setting involves
setting clear objectives to ensure that targets are reached. Good goals should
challenging but achievable, and require solid time management skills. There are
a number of techniques that can be used to set good goals, and achieve the
things that you want in business and at home:
Be passionate
If you can work your goals around the things you are
passionate about, then you will want to achieve these goals more quickly, and
will get greater satisfaction from the goals that you achieve. You should find
your passions first, and then set your goals around them.
Be realistic
Your goals should be challenging, but they must remain
realistic and achievable. If you set your goals too high then you will be
doomed to failure, even if your achievements are commendable. Set your goals at
a level you are pretty confident of achieving, and then if you beat your goal
that is even better.
Be driven by your values
When we pursue some goals, in particular the goals
associated with monetary gain, we can often lose sight of our own values. If
you cannot link a goal to own of your own values, then you should not waste
your time pursuing these goals. If you are true to yourself then achieving your
goals will bring you real satisfaction.
Be detailed
Once you have decided upon some goals, you need to look at
them in detail. Simply having a goal is not enough. You need to know how you
are going to achieve, when you are going to achieve it, the time management
issues involved, and any obstacles that might be in your way. You also need to
think about how you will know you have achieved your goals, and how you will
feel when you do achieve them.
Plan
In order to effectively achieve your goals, you need to
plan in detail. Start from the end result and then work backwards, so you can
see how to get to where you want to be. Look at time management, and plan times
when you will focus on your goals.
Remain accountable
Always make sure that you remain accountable for your goals.
Find a mentor who you can use to keep you on track. Get into the habit of
reporting to them about your progress, and set yourself deadlines along the way
to keep yourself motivated and focused on your main objective.
Have fun
Whatever goals you set, make sure that there is an element
of fun to them. You are unlikely to achieve goals that frustrate or annoy you,
and this will lead to failure and unhappiness. Have fun trying to achieve your goals,
and reward yourself as you progress. If things get tough, take a break from
your goals and do something else to take your mind off it.
Believe
It is important to truly believe that you can achieve your
goals. If you believe you cannot achieve a goal, then you won’t. If you don’t
believe 100% in a goal, then change it to something that you can believe. Goals
that you don’t believe in will just make you frustrated and unmotivated.
Seek support
Often it is hard to achieve your goals all by yourself. Do
not be afraid to seek support from friends or professionals. If it helps you to
achieve your goals, then it is worthwhile.
Do not give up
Remember that goals can take time to achieve, and require
your belief and commitment. If your goals are realistic and you stick with
them, the chances are that you will get there eventually. Of course you will
not always achieve your goals, but you should try before you give up. If things
do not work for you, then try other things until you finding something that
allows you to achieve your goals.
