The Power Of Self-Knowledge

Self development is about the ability to know one’s self. If you have the power of self-knowledge, then you can be more successful in both your career and relationships. Self-development depends on being honest with yourself, and knowing your strengths and weaknesses. Only with self-awareness can you improve your motivation and become a better person. Self-development can seem hard, but there are some easy ways that you can get to know yourself better:

Where to start

The first step to self-development and getting to know yourself better is to take an honest look at your life. Look at what your talents and interests are, and assess all of your skills. Once you understand how you view the world, and what you want from life, you can begin to find ways to motivate yourself.

Get feedback

One of the best self-development techniques is to get to know yourself through the way others perceive you. Few people are able to objectively look at themselves as others do. If you can get independent feedback from people who know you, then this will aid your self-development. This feedback can be obtained from work colleagues in a formal setting, or simply from friends and family. However, make sure that whoever you get feedback from is going to be honest with you, as it will help you in the long term if they point out any problems and difficulties that they think you might have.

Emotional intelligence

One way to progress in your self-development is to test your emotional intelligence. It has been proven that those people with higher emotional intelligence have a greater level of self-knowledge. This will help you to understand just how much you know about yourself, and the areas that you need to improve. You will find out how you react to certain situations, and why you react in this way. The types of questions you might answer are:

·         How do you deal with difficulties?

·         When and how do you show empathy and respect?

·         How adaptable are you in any given situation?

·         Are you able to control your moods?

Find a mentor

The right mentor can really help you to improve self-development. As an impartial observer and someone you want to listen to, they can more easily identify certain behaviours that you have and help you to change and negative behaviours. You are much more likely to believe and focus on what your mentor is saying, because they are someone you trust and respect.

Keep a journal

Keeping a journal allows you to analyse your thoughts and feelings, which will aid your self-development. You can go back and reflect on your failures and achievements at a later time, and see how you have changed over the months and years. It also allows you to understand where your motivation lies, and how your relationships develop. Often, seeing on paper how we are thinking and feeling gives us greater insight and makes us really see ourselves. The best person to learn about you is from yourself, because you are the expert.

Don’t be afraid to say ‘I don’t know’

Finally, you must understand that it is not a bad thing to not understand or know something. The way to improve your self-development is to look at your behaviours, and anything that you cannot explain, say ‘I don’t know why I do/did that’. If you do this, then you can begin to find out more about why you do these things, and you will slowly learn more about yourself. If you are honest with yourself, and remain unafraid, then you can be successful in your self-development, and improve the relationships in your life.
