Handheld Devices: Do They Really Make A Difference?
A
personal digital assistant, or PDA, is basically a handheld computer. A PDA
allows you to do basic computer functions on a small handheld device. It is
like an electronic organiser for your business and personal life. There are
many different handheld devices on the market now, from the Palm pilot to the Pocket
PC, and it is hard to work out what is best for you, if any at all. This
article will help you to decide whether a PDA is right for you, and some of the
things to look out for when purchasing a PDA.
The
operating system
The
first thing you should consider when buying a PDA is the operating system. Much
like a normal computer, handheld devices can come with a variety of operating
systems. The two main systems are Windows CE for Pocket PC and Palm OS for Palm
systems. If you are looking for word processing features and are familiar with
Windows, then going for a PDA with Windows CE is probably the best choice.
However, if you only need a PDA for organiser functions, then any system should
be fine. Just remember that Windows CE only works with Windows computers, and
may use more battery life than other operating systems.
Memory
Just like your desktop PC, a PDA possesses basic
RAM memory. Basically the more RAM that you have, the more room you have to run
applications and store files. A good amount of memory for a PDA is around
32-64MB, although some HP models come with up to 128MB. Whatever the current
level of memory, find out what the maximum level of memory is for your PDA, so
that you know how much you can upgrade in the future.
Some PDA devices can also use additional memory
stick or card memory types. When choosing a PDA this should also be considered.
Size
Obviously,
as you going to be carrying your PDA around, size is important. There is no
easy answer to this question, although usually the smaller handheld devices
will be more expensive. Look at the features you want and then pick the
smallest one that you can afford, although if a smaller size is not really
necessary then go for the larger and cheaper one.
Display
Handheld
devices have various display screens. Pocket PCs and PDA systems usually have
similar screens. The usual variations are colour or black and white, and
resolution, as well as screens for indoor and outdoor use. Obviously,
high-resolution colour screens will be more expensive, and will drain your
battery more quickly. You should think about the needs you have, and the
visibility you require, and find the best balance between price and visibility.
Expansion
capabilities
One important thing to consider when buying a PDA
or Pocket PC is the amount of expansion slots and connectivity that it has. The
greater the expansion capacity, then the longer you will be able to continue
using it. Also, good connectivity will mean that you can interface with a wider
range of devices, which will make your handheld device more versatile.
Batteries
HP handhelds come with rechargeable lithium-ion
batteries, and also a cradle charger so you can charge the batteries.
Obviously, battery life is very important and you should evaluate the battery
life of different devices and different battery types. It is also usually
advisable to have a spare battery ready so that you can use your device
continuously for longer periods of time.
Usability
One of the most important factors to consider is
the basic usability of a PDA or other handheld device. Are the buttons the
right size, is the screen a good size, and are you comfortable using the
device? If you want to use the device regularly, you need to make sure you are
going to be comfortable with the way it works. If a device seems to be awkward
after an initial demonstration, then it is best to avoid it and find something
you are more comfortable with.
What
is right for you?
In
general handheld devices such as PDAs, Palms and Pocket PCs can be every useful
in both business and general personal organisation. The type of PDA you choose
will largely depend on your requirements, and more importantly on the budget
that you have to spend. If you take some of these factors into account before
buying a PDA, then you are more likely to find something that you want and can
use long term.
